A graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Murphy is the owner of the Animal and Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor.
With over 30 years of veterinary medical practice, and Board Certified in Exotic Bird Medicine, Dr. Murphy will treat your pet as if he or she is his own.

ABVP BOARD CERTIFIED, DR. JOEL MURPHY GRADUATED FROM VIRGINIA TECH WITH A B.S. IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND A MINOR IN ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY.
He then attended and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983. After graduation, Dr. Murphy was awarded a fellowship at the University of Georgia Veterinary School to receive advanced training in internal medicine and surgery for cats and dogs.
While at the University of Georgia, Dr. Murphy started the exotic animal and bird department and taught these specialties to veterinary students.
Dr. Joel Murphy was one of the first veterinarians in the world to be awarded Board Certification in Exotic Bird Medicine.
This advanced specialty requires 4 years of additional training and testing following the customary 8 years of veterinary school. He founded the Murphy Exotic Bird Research Center to advance the knowledge of avian nutrition, breeding and medicine. This was one of the largest non-profit research facilities for the study of captive breeding and nutrition of exotic birds in the world and was featured on Good Morning America.
AFTER VETERINARY SCHOOL,
Dr. Murphy received advanced training in orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, microsurgery, laparoscopy, internal medicine and dermatology in canine and feline medicine. He has completed advanced training in ultrasound, radiology, and endoscopy.
Dr. Murphy is one of the few veterinarians in the world who is trained in microsurgical procedures in birds and exotics and has developed many surgical procedures. The Animal & Bird Medical Center is an international referral center for specialty care of exotic birds and mammals. He has over 30 years of experience in orthopedic, cardiac, laparoscopic, and soft tissue surgery in dogs and cats.
IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL MEDICINE,
Dr. Murphy has had extensive training in holistic and natural medicine. He has formulated holistic supplements for many pet supplement companies. The “Healthy Pet” supplements he formulated for Renew Life are sold in most pet stores and health food stores.

And also has written hundreds of veterinary articles for veterinary journals and pet magazines; in-addition, Dr. Murphy has been a guest lecturer for veterinarian conferences all over the United States, Europe and as far away as Nepal. In-addition to his travels, Dr. Murphy has appeared on many television shows and has been seen on all of the local Tampa Bay television stations and has been featured on Animal Planet.
Dr. Murphy is married to Caroline Murphy and has 3 children. When not at the hospital, he enjoys sailing, scuba diving, skiing, and horseback riding and going to the movies with his family. Dr. Murphy’s animal and nature photography has won many awards and has been published.

Dr. Koulianos has been with ABMC for over 15 years.
Dr. Koulianos' Bio
Was accepted into the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987 prior to completing his undergraduate degree.
Attended the UF College of Agriculture while also enrolled in graduate veterinary curriculum and received his BS in Animal Science from the University of Florida College of Agriculture in 1990 before earning his DVM degree from UF College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991.
After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Koulianos joined a small animal referral practice in Pasco County where he was in charge of all internal medicine and dermatology cases.
Six years later, with management expertise from his wife, Erine, Dr. Koulianos opened his own small animal general practice. Dr. Koulianos eventually transitioned into serving practices throughout the Tampa Bay area as a relief veterinarian.
In 2006, his role at the Animal and Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor grew into a full time position although he still serves select practices in the Pinellas County area. Main areas of interest are canine and feline internal medicine, dermatology and nutrition.
Dr. Koulianos believes in an integrative approach to health maintenance, and disease prevention/management by combining diet /nutraceuticals, herbal and laser therapies together with more traditional medicine. Dr. Koulianos is a frequent guest on local television and radio pet care segments.

Dr. Koulianos, Erine and their family recently completed a 20 year long project of helping to build the only authentic traditional Byzantine style basilica Orthodox church in the United States – in Palm Harbor, FL.

I AM A LICENSED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, AND STARTED WORKING IN VETERINARY MEDICINE NEARLY 18 YEARS AGO.
MY FIRST CAREER OF 12 YEARS WAS IN THE HUMAN NURSING FIELD WHERE I WORKED IN AN OB CLINIC WHILE SERVING IN THE U.S. ARMY IN GERMANY, THEN AS AN OUTPATIENT SURGERY AND SURGICAL FLOOR NURSE AT A SMALL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IN CENTRAL INDIANA.
I enjoyed my experiences in the human nursing field, but I LOVE my second career choice in Veterinary Medicine! I am a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, and my passion is to educate owners, and provide direct care to their wonderful pets.
I currently live in Holiday, Florida, and I share my home with 2 dogs (Samwise & Simon), 3 cats (Nopi, Natalia, and Hobbit), and a precocious Senegal Parrot named Malo.

I have always loved working with animals. Since I was little, my parents have always thought that I was some kind of animal whisperer because animals always come to me.
I spent 2.5 years at Pasco County Animal Shelter and did over 275 hours community service while attending Marchman Technical Education Center junior- senior years.
I plan on continuing my education into veterinary medicine to pursue my passion and career in animal medicine.
I have 4 German shepherds, 2 cats and a dachshund. (Only one – Shiloh James, is mine)
I enjoy my time-off spending time with family and friends. I love spending time and car rides with my baby boy Shiloh James. He’s my whole world.
When I’m not spending time with him, family or friends, I am bowling, playing basketball, going to the beach, sewing or reading. I also love to babysit kids in my spare time because I love kids too!
