A graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Murphy is the owner of the Animal and Bird Medical Center of Palm Harbor.
With over 30 years of veterinary medical practice, and Board Certified in Exotic Bird Medicine, Dr. Murphy will treat your pet as if he or she is his own.
He then attended and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983. After graduation, Dr. Murphy was awarded a fellowship at the University of Georgia Veterinary School to receive advanced training in internal medicine and surgery for cats and dogs.
While at the University of Georgia, Dr. Murphy started the exotic animal and bird department and taught these specialties to veterinary students.
Dr. Joel Murphy was one of the first veterinarians in the world to be awarded Board Certification in Exotic Bird Medicine.
This advanced specialty requires 4 years of additional training and testing following the customary 8 years of veterinary school. He founded the Murphy Exotic Bird Research Center to advance the knowledge of avian nutrition, breeding and medicine. This was one of the largest non-profit research facilities for the study of captive breeding and nutrition of exotic birds in the world and was featured on Good Morning America.
Dr. Murphy received advanced training in orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, microsurgery, laparoscopy, internal medicine and dermatology in canine and feline medicine. He has completed advanced training in ultrasound, radiology, and endoscopy.
Dr. Murphy is one of the few veterinarians in the world who is trained in microsurgical procedures in birds and exotics and has developed many surgical procedures. The Animal & Bird Medical Center is an international referral center for specialty care of exotic birds and mammals. He has over 30 years of experience in orthopedic, cardiac, laparoscopic, and soft tissue surgery in dogs and cats.
Dr. Murphy has had extensive training in holistic and natural medicine. He has formulated holistic supplements for many pet supplement companies. The “Healthy Pet” supplements he formulated for Renew Life are sold in most pet stores and health food stores.
And also has written hundreds of veterinary articles for veterinary journals and pet magazines; in-addition, Dr. Murphy has been a guest lecturer for veterinarian conferences all over the United States, Europe and as far away as Nepal. In-addition to his travels, Dr. Murphy has appeared on many television shows and has been seen on all of the local Tampa Bay television stations and has been featured on Animal Planet.
Dr. Murphy is married to Caroline Murphy and has 3 children. When not at the hospital, he enjoys sailing, scuba diving, skiing, and horseback riding and going to the movies with his family. Dr. Murphy’s animal and nature photography has won many awards and has been published.

MY FIRST CAREER OF 12 YEARS WAS IN THE HUMAN NURSING FIELD WHERE I WORKED IN AN OB CLINIC WHILE SERVING IN THE U.S. ARMY IN GERMANY, THEN AS AN OUTPATIENT SURGERY AND SURGICAL FLOOR NURSE AT A SMALL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL IN CENTRAL INDIANA.
I enjoyed my experiences in the human nursing field, but I LOVE my second career choice in Veterinary Medicine! I am a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, and my passion is to educate owners, and provide direct care to their wonderful pets.
I currently live in Holiday, Florida, and I share my home with 2 dogs (Samwise & Simon), 3 cats (Nopi, Natalia, and Hobbit), and a precocious Senegal Parrot named Malo.

Starting at a very young age, I have always had a passion for caring for animals.I grew up taking care of several different types of animals (reptiles, birds, dogs, ferrets), so I feel that this has helped me develop my passion.

When I’m not at the office, I enjoy traveling and taking cruises to explore new countries.
Many people say I am very social. I enjoy meeting new people and their fur babies.

I have one Cat Grimm .I rescued him as a small kitten .
I also have one Lab Mix named Rory who was also a rescue.
I grew up with lots of animals from horses & chickens to reptiles and fish. I had always hoped to be helping and working with animals as a little girl and so happy to be a part of the ABMC crew family.
When Im not with my ABMC family I enjoy spending time with my family at home going to local markets and taking my daughter to the park to watch all the birds.
Josie has been a part of our family since 2017.

After working at a wildlife rehabilitation center and doggy daycare, I am thrilled to be continuing my love for helping animals at Animal and Bird Medical Center. Having completed a cross-country move, I couldn't have asked to join a better family!
Karee used to volunteer with ABMC and has now been a full-time family member for over 3 years.

I have 4 pets. I have 2 tan Chihuahua mixes named Foster and Willie and I have 2 black and white cats named Jack and Alice.
